The Business Gateway
March 2007

All the thrills of some of the world’s most famous motor-racing are now easily available as a Broughty Ferry man is racing ahead with a new business idea that will bring the excitement of the world-famous Indianapolis racetrack to enthusiasts all over the country,

Robert McTavish has been a lifelong motor-sport fan and has visited the Indianapolis racetrack—called The Brickyard—many times. Now he is offering a full excursion to the track including accommodation at a luxury hotel, coach link to and from Indianapolis airport, police escort to the racetrack and tickets for practise and race days. Race enthusiasts will be escorted by local guides.

Speaking at his home Robert said “Motor-racing at The Brickyard is an incredible experience, with a terrific atmosphere. However, half a million people go to the Indy 500 meeting, for example, so it’s complicated for individuals to organise a trip, especially if they’ve never been before. Indy Race Days provides everything you need once you get to Indianapolis to have a great weekend with no hassle and just enjoy the tremendous racing.”

He explained “I’ve been organising trips like this informally for friends for several years and decided to expand into a business because of the demand.”

Indy Race Days is supported by The Business Gateway in Dundee. Business Start-Up Advisor Donna Fordyce said “Robert has a great business idea which should appeal to a niche market. We helped Robert to set up Indy Race Days and gave him assistance with his business and marketing plans, and our e-business team helped to develop his website.” The business Gateway provides a wide range of services for new and existing businesses, most of which are free. It can be contacted on 0845 609 6611.

Indy Race Days does not provide flights to and from Indianapolis because it is so easy and cheap these days to get budget flights. Instead Robert concentrates on the elements that are more difficult to arrange such as local transport and accommodation. He said “On practise and race days the routes to and from the Brickyard are extremely busy and it’s difficult to get through. So we provide a luxury coach with a police escort so that visitors don’t waste any time getting to see the action. We take all the bother out of finding accommodation. The hotel is one that I have used myself and it is superb. We aim to give a very personal service so that people can have a relaxed and enjoyable experience while missing none of the exhilaration of the racing.” More details are available on the company’s website.

There are three big race weekends at The Brickyard every year, the renowned Indy 500 at the end of May, the Formula One on June 17th this year and the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) race in July. Indy Race Days is organising tours to all three events.

Prices for a weekend trip start from £545, which includes all accommodation, track tickets, transport to and from the airport and track. Places are limited so those interested are advised to get in touch with Indy Race Days soon either online via the website at http://www.indyracedays.com/ or by calling Robert direct on 01382 736743.

Robert McTavish has a long history of involvement in motor sport and was formerly well known in offshore powerboat racing, when he campaigned as an independent racer for several years. He is mechanic of the Broughty Ferry lifeboat. Robert is married with one son.
